Tānemahuta is the Māori Atua (God), symbolic of the birds and the forests.
He is responsible for separating his parents, Rangi and Papa, obtaining the three baskets of knowledge; te kete tuatea, te kete tuauri and te kete aronui from the heavens and creating the first woman out of the sacred red clay kurawaka, her name was Hineahuone.
