Little Boxes on the Hillside

Little Boxes on the Hillside is part of the Hokianga series,  a group of paintings (acrylic on canvas or woodpanel), created during a 5-week visual art residency at the Rawene Church studio in the Hokianga (April - May, 2023). This painting was loosely inspired by the view of Rawene when on the ferry to or from Kohukohu.The village looks like a collection of pretty coloured boxes that starkly contrast with the greyness of the skies and the harbour. The weather appears to have a preference for rain, storm and mist, draining the environment of colour and perhaps vibrancy.
